Catford is a south London district in London's Borough of Lewisham. It is one of Greater London's 35 major centres, according to the London Plan and can be found a little more than 6 miles southeast of Charing Cross. Much of Catford is considered a throwback to the 60s and 70s, when many of the housing developments and the civic centre was built. Catford's name comes from the fact that it was the point at which cattle during Saxon times crossed the River Ravensbourne.
Though many of the old churches and buildings from Catford's beginnings are no longer standing and have been replaced with architecture that was modern during the 1960s, the hand-pump survives from the 1850s and sites in Rushey Green, which is outside the Eros House music hall. Another option for entertainment is the Broadway Theatre in Catford, which is attached to the town hall and is an example of art deco architecture. And an interesting site is the Catford Cat, a large sculpture of a black cat made of fiberglass that sits above the Catford Centre shopping area. A street market can be found on Catford Broadway and there are a number of pubs and independent restaurants in the area.
For cultural events, the Broadway Theatre is the main place to be, but an outdoor event called the Lewisham Peoples Day happens annually in Mountsfield Park. There was also, until a few years ago, an annual festival called the Catford Beer Festival, which was one of southern England's largest and was arranged by the Campaign for Real Ale. If you are moving to Catford, you will be joining the ranks of Cat Stevens, who lived there in the 60s and the British heavyweight boxer Sir Henry Cooper. For a bit of sport, there is the Non-league football club, the Lewisham Borough FC, which is based at the Ladywell Arena.
