The Isle of Scilly is an island group, also known as an archipelago, which are situated in the county of Cornwall in the South West region of England. The collection of islands have been a separate part of the county of Cornwall since 1890 and have had a separate local authority from the Cornwall county since this year too. The Isle of Scilly is ranked as the least populated of all of the English districts and boroughs, as it is listed as the three hundredth and twenty sixth and has a very small population of just 2, 200 people.
It has been recorded that the Isle of Scilly has been an inhabited isle for many years and in fact, the history of the areas inhabitation dates back as far as to the Stone Age. For many years, the Isle of Scilly was well known and extremely popular for its fishing and farming, as this was one of the main sources of income for the archipelago however, although the fishing and farming culture still exists here, the main source of income in the area is now tourism mainly. The largest of the isles in this South West is St. Mary’s. There are a number of isles which make up the Isles of Scilly. There are five main isles in Isles of Scilly, the five more major isles are: St. Mary’s, St. Martin’s, Tresco, Bryher and St. Agnes. The smallest of the isles is Nornour, which is a very small rocky skerry. Although the tiny isle of Nornour is the smallest of them all, it has been noted that the remains of a prehistoric farm were found there. It is thought that Nornour would have been a larger isle many years ago, but is now no longer used for farming as it is very small and its terrain isn’t suitable for farming either.
As the group of South West English isles are relatively small, the population of them is smaller than in other South West English counties and districts too. For those who reside on the Isles of Scilly, education is available to the residents of the isles up until the age of sixteen. Compulsory education for children between the ages of four and sixteen is available on the isles, in particular the larger of the isles which are inhabited. However, for any students who want to continue their education by going in to the sixth form and taking their A-levels and for those who wish to attend university or a college then they must attend schools on English mainland. Students who are aged between sixteen and eighteen years of age and who reside on the Isles of Scilly are entitled to a free place in the sixth form at either a school or college. They are also provided with free transportation to the mainland from the Isles of Scilly by plane and are also given free accommodation on the mainland, where they can stay throughout the week when they are studying.
