Head a little more than three miles to the west of Charing Cross and you will find yourself in the inner-London district called Earls Court. It is part of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and is quite a desirable place to live. Princess Diana even once lived here, among other famous residents, such as Alfred Hitchcock and Freddie Mercury. Though not very far from the centre of London, it was once a very rural place full of pastures and gardens. But the Metropolitan District Railway station came to Earls Court in the middle of the 19th century and brought with it development. It soon became a popular suburb and population increased rapidly.
Earls Court was once a hub for newly arrived immigrants, especially from Poland, Australia and New Zealand, as it was an affordable spot near central London. But gentrification brought change to Earls Court and the prices of properties in the area went sky high. There is a significant difference, however, between the east and west in Earls Court to this day with East Earls Court being full of mansions and houses with gardens and West Earls Court having a mix of architectures and housing types. The district's most famous landmark is arguably the Earls Court Exhibition Centre, which was built in the 1930s and maintains a classic art deco look. It was once home to many of the country's largest exhibitions, but is now more often used as a performing arts centre and concert venue for famous musical acts and orchestras.
Residents can also enjoy the Troubadour, a music spot and café that once hosted Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan and others. It's been around since the 50s, so the atmosphere is premium. Local theatre performances can be seen at Finborough Theatre, which has won a number of awards since opening a few decades ago. For dining, try one of the many Filipino and Asian restaurants in the area that is home to a large British Filipino population.
