Crystal Palace is a south London residential area whose name is derived from the Crystal Palace, a former landmark. The palace existed in the area from the middle of the 19th century until 1936 and was located eight miles south from Charing Cross. Today, the area of Crystal Palace is known for its amazing views of London, since it sits on one of the capital city's highest points. This area is also unique in that its electoral ward and the Crystal Palace Park lie in the Borough of Bromley, but the larger area falls within five different London boroughs. The boroughs that Crystal Palace stretches across include Bromley, Lambeth, Southwark, Croydon, and Lewisham.
Before the area was built up as a residential part of the city, it was covered by the Great North Wood. This oak forest was a place of lore and was a popular place for recreation for Londoners. The wood was also occupied by Gypsies, and many of Crystal Palace's streets and pubs bear names as a testament to these former residents. The palace itself also has an interesting history. It was built in Hyde Park in 1851 for the Great Exhibition and was rebuilt after being moved in 1854 to Sydenham Hill, where it stood for decades. Unfortunately, a fire destroyed the palace, but the place where it once stood is called Crystal Palace Park today. Parts of the park will be used for the 2012 summer Olympics and the park has a long history as a recreation area for residents dating back to the Victorian era. There is even a lake within the park, as well as many paths for walking.
Two sports teams are available in Crystal Palace, an association football club called Crystal Palace FC and an American Football team called the London Olympians. Crystal Palace and Crystal Palace Park have appeared in many films and TV shows - indeed, television is quite important to the area since there are two TV towers transmitting from Crystal Palace, which are like local landmarks that can be seen throughout London.
