Kingston upon Thames is the major settlement of southwest London's Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames. The area where it is located was once called Surrey, but is now part of Greater London. Kingston upon Thames holds the distinction of being a market town where Saxon kings received their crowns in ancient times. Now, it's a suburb that is ten miles southwest of Charing Cross and one of the London Plan's major metropolitan areas. The Old Town Hall on Market Place still retains an old-world charm and is a gathering place for residents and visitors alike. The crowning of those Saxon kings occurred on the Coronation Stone, in front of the Guildhall.
In more modern times, Kingston was an area with a manufacturing centre that specialized in military aircraft, specifically fighter planes. The factory of British Aerospace was a major employer and engine of economic development during the 20th century, but was closed in 1992. Kingston is now a university town due to the establishment and growth of Kingston Polytechnic, now Kingston University. Kingston's original importance was derived from the fact that it was the first crossing place on the Thames above the London Bridge.
Today, the centre of Kingston is a great place for shopping, but mixed in with the retail stores are plenty of civic offices and commercial areas. Plenty of transport will get you into the centre and there is no lack of parking. Shopping is centred on Church Street in the Bentalls Centre and in the Rotunda. There are plenty of national chain stores, but for a more authentic shopping experience, you can visit Market Place, the site of a daily market that has been held in this place since Saxon or possible even Roman times. For entertainment, there are plenty of public houses and restaurants. Some of the pubs are quite old and traditional, but there are modern ethnic restaurants as well. Go see the Out of Order sculpture, one of Kingston's most unusual landmarks. Or catch a match of one of the three association football clubs that play at Kingsmeadow Stadium and in Tolworth.
